History
In 1916, Mr Edmond Vagneux, an engineer of the « Pont et chaussées » (bridges and highways) and former polytechnic student advanced the use of concrete in the rail industry by designing an innovative sleeper made with two concrete blocks connected by a steel tie bar. The twin block sleeper was invented.
Named the « Vagneux system » it featured a fastening mechanism based on a screw bolt and thiollier steel insert that provided a robust system.
A few years later, Mr Vagneux set up the SATEBA Company to promote his invention.
After 1976, due to their competitive price and satisfactory performance, twin block sleepers became the standard.
In 1975 SATEBA was taken over by the Bonna Sabla, the leading French group in pre-cast concrete production.
In 1986, SATEBA started the design and production of concrete bearers for turnouts at the factory in Charmes.
SATEBA has now become one of the most important manufacturers of concrete sleepers in France. It plays a key role in the promotion and development of modern track in the world.
